about

Say whut? This... is kinda different.

In the early 2000's, Steve (and later Katy) did a few holiday albums that he gave out to friends. While he doesn't quite have the spoons today to return to full albums; this little sampler is intended as a (late, again) holiday card for all our friends and family.

THE STORY OF THE INSTRUMENT (Part 1)

When he was in grade school, Steve wanted to do anything musical that was possible. So, playing guitar, singing in choir- these were obvious. But, he also really wanted to play in band and orchestra.

His sister suggested that he look into bassoon. She was an oboe player, and likely figured that getting a family monopoly on double reeds was a good market to get into. Steve saw that bassoons seemed to be a pretty rare breed. This meant that he didn't have to fight for a place- he was generally automatically first chair! (Being first chair without having to fight for it had a particular appeal- he wasn't really into that competition thing...)

While Steve really enjoyed playing in band and orchestra in school; he was, at best, a disinterested bassoon student. The school owned the instrument he played on (which is good- because bassoons are EXPENSIVE), and once he left school, he figured he'd leave the bassoon behind with it. He was able to carry on for a couple years after graduation on borrowed instruments, but put it down for good in 1982.

In 2022, after 40 years of not touching the instrument; he decided to start up again. God help us all (seriously, I hope you enjoy this little offering).

Enjoy, and may the season, however you celebrate it, bring you the rest and renewal you need.

Happy Holidays!
